Project 365 here 365Pieces
The idea of writing these blogs in the same way that I wrote the January Movies post is kind of daunting so these reviews will be much more concise.
Never Let Me Go (dir. Mark Romanek)

It’s September right now and this is probably still my film of the year. Emotionally touching and devastating in equal parts and flawless film-making. It is beyond any reasoning how this film went unrewarded last award season. Literally every aspect of this film is perfect. Possibly better than the novel, too.

_____
Inside Job (dir. Charles Ferguson)

Surprisingly funny documentary about the global recession. Succeeds in making you seethe with anger but the last shot is one of the most simple yet effective things I’ve seen in cinema.
4.5/5
_____
True Grit (dir. Coen Brothers)

Great adaptation of the book that slightly lags at the beginning but Hailee Steinfeld’s performance makes up for that. She’s a star. Bridges and Damon are also suitably hilarious.

_____
Confessions (Kokuhaku) (dir. Tetsuya Nakashima)

Japanese film about revenge and a lot more. It really needs to be seen to be believed. High concept plot, crisp cinematography and a flawless opening 40 minutes make this possibly the most unique and disturbing films I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen anything like it. See it at all costs.
4.5/5
_____
The Fighter (dir. David O. Russell)

I didn’t think I’d enjoy this but it was really engrossing and uplifting. Predictable as Disney, of course, but the sheer delight you feel at the end makes up for that and its other minor flaws.
3.5/5
_____
Animal Kingdom (dir. David Michôd)

Tense and gripping - what every great crime film should be. Animal Kingdom was tight and focused as a Fincher movie but its brooding score (as well as the also brooding performance by James Frecheville) set it apart from other great crime movies by focusing more on tone, having a bleak sense of humour and building up dread. Michôd is one to watch. Outstanding.
